దేవ రాజ సేవ్య మాన పావనాంఘ్రి పంకజం
వ్యాళ యజ్ఞ సూత్ర మిందు శేఖరం కృపాకరమ్
నారదాది యోగిబృంద వందితం దిగంబరం
కాశికాపురాధి నాథ కాలభైరవం భజే

భాను కోటి భాస్వరం భవాబ్ది తారకం పరం
నీల కంఠ మీప్సితార్ధ దాయకం త్రిలోచనమ్
కాల కాల మంబుజాక్ష మక్ష శూల మక్షరం
కాశికాపురాధి నాథ కాలభైరవం భజే

శూలటంక పాశదండ పాణిమాది కారణం
శ్యామ కాయ మాది దేవ మక్షరం నిరామయమ్
భీమవిక్రమం ప్రభుం విచిత్ర తాండవప్రియం
కాశికాపురాధి నాథ కాలభైరవం భజే

భుక్తి ముక్తి దాయకం ప్రశస్త చారు విగ్రహం
భక్తవత్సలం స్థితం సమస్త లోక విగ్రహమ్

ధర్మ సేతు పాలకం త్వధర్మమార్గ నాశకం
కర్మ పాశ మోచకం సుశర్మదాయకం విభుమ్

రత్నపాదుకాప్రభాభిరామ పాదయుగ్మకం
నిత్యమద్వితీయమిష్టదైవతం నిరంజనమ్
మృత్యుదర్పనాశనం కరాళదంష్ట్రభూషణం

అట్టహాసభిన్న పద్మజాండకోశసంతతిం
దృష్టిపాతనష్ట పాపజాలముగ్రశాశనమ్
అష్టశిద్ధిదాయకం కపాలమాలికాధరం
కాశికాపురాధి నాథ కాలభైరవం భజే

భూతసంఘనాయకం విశాలకీర్తి దాయకం
కాశివాసిలోకపుణ్య పాపశోధకం విభుమ్
నీతిమార్గకోవిదం పురాతనం జగత్ప్రభుం
కాశికాపురాధి నాథ కాలభైరవం భజే

కాలభైరవాష్టకం పఠంతి యే మనోహరం
జ్ఞానముక్తిసాధనం విచిత్రపుణ్యవర్ధనమ్
శోకమోహదైన్యలోభకోపతాపనాశనం
తే ప్రయాంతి కాలభైరవాంఘ్రిసన్నిధిం ధ్రువమ్

To the One whose lotus feet are served king of the Devas,
That merciful One who bears the moon on His forehead,
Who wears a serpent as His sacred thread and is clad in the directions,
And who is worshipped by Narada and other yogis;
Obeisance to Kalabhairava, the Lord of city of Kashi. (1)

To the One whose luster is like a million suns,
That supreme Being who delivers us across the ocean of existence,
The blue-throated, three-eyed One who grants all wishes,
He of lotus-eyes and grave trident, who is the death of time itself;
Obeisance to Kalabhairava, the Lord of city of Kashi. (2)

To the Bearer of the spear, sword, noose and club,
That primeval Cause, the black-bodied, imperishable prime Lord,
The One free from all afflictions, the formidable Hero,
To the Lord who loves the wonderful Tandava dance;
Obeisance to Kalabhairava, the Lord of city of Kashi. (3)

To the Bestower of enjoyment and liberation,
He who is praised for His pleasant form and loves His devotees,
That Lord of the entire world, who assumes myriad forms,
And wears a waist band attached with golden bells;
Obeisance to Kalabhairava, the Lord of city of Kashi. (4)

To the Maintainer of the bridge of Dharma and the Destroyer of adharmic paths,
That Lord who saves us from the binds of karma and brings shame of misdeeds,
He whose body appears adorned because of the golden nooses He carries,
Obeisance to Kalabhairava, the Lord of city of Kashi. (5)

To Him who wears sandals studded with gems,
That eternal One without a second, the Lord of our hearts,
The stainless One, who destroys the fear of death,
He of large teeth and fearful form, the Granter of liberation;
Obeisance to Kalabhairava, the Lord of city of Kashi. (6)

To Him whose loud laughter can tear asunder all born of the egg of Brahma,
That fierce Ruler whose very sight is enough to destroy the web of sins,
To the Granter of the eight siddhis, the One who wears a garland of skulls;
Obeisance to Kalabhairava, the Lord of city of Kashi. (7)

To the Commander of the hosts of spirits and the Bestower of great glory,
That Lord, the Resident of Kashi, the Purifier of the world’s goods and evils,
He who intimately knows the path of righteousness,
The most ancient One, the Lord of the universe;
Obeisance to Kalabhairava, the Lord of city of Kashi. (8)

Lord Bhairav is considered to be the incarnation of Lord Shiva. Kaala Bhairava actually was a shortened form of Kaala Shakti Bhairava - the Lord who controls the Shakti of Kaala - the Power of Time . The Sanskrit meaning of the word ‘Bhairava’ is ‘Terrible’ or ‘Frightful’. Kaala Bhairav Ashtakam composed by Shri Adi Shankaracharya is devoted to in Kaal Bhairav. Bhairav is a fierce form of Lord Shiva and worshipped by Hindus and Buddhists alike. It is believed that Kalabhairava would solve most of the problems which are pending for a long time.

Lord Kala Bhairava is also known as Kshetrapalaka, the guardian of the temple. In honor of this, keys to the temple are ceremonially submitted to Lord Kaala Bhairava at temple closing time and are received from him at opening time

Lord Kaala Bhairava is also the guardian of travelers. The Siddhas advise us that before embarking on a journey, especially one that involves travel during the night, we should make a garland of cashew nuts and decorate Lord Kala Bhairava with it. We should light jothi lamps in His honor and request His protection during our travel.

The god has dog as his personal vehicle, it is even said that if we are good and respect dogs we will be protected. Though people dislike dogs they should not harm them.

"Kalabairava Astami", during Late December or early January, based on lunar calender.is the day of Kala Bhairavan. Its auspicious to say "Om Kalabhairavaaya Namaha" or "Khalabairava potri potri" on start of a journey. Saying the chant at the start of every journey, even day to day travel guards you from the evil behavior of others.

During a visit to shiva temple, people are advised to sit at least for a moment inside the premises. This makes shiva to send a pair of "Bhoothaganas", his personal body guards till our journey is safely done.


Honoring and praying to Kala Bhairava makes the Time Shaktis happy and in return they never allow you to lose track of time or waste time.
